For a sustainable vacation surrounded by uncontaminated nature  and ancient and fascinating history, come to Cavallino Treporti, where you can explore the authenticity and beauty of this town's  coastline, its strong identity and connection to traditions.

But why the name 'Cavallino'? Cavallino (literally 'little horse') comes from the old place name Equilium, a plain where the horses of the Roman Empire were reared.
The Municipality of Cavallino Treporti was established in 1999 and it is one of the newest municipalities in Italy, but the history of its land is ancient.
The first witnesses of the ancient origins of Cavallino Treporti date back to the Roman Empire. Recently, two Roman patrician houses were found in the archaeological excavations of the lagoon hamlet of Lio Piccolo, submerged in water.
When the Roman Empire fell, the land where Cavallino Treporti is now located did not experience a period of great splendour.
Under the dominion of the Repubblica Serenissima (Most Serene Republic), Cavallino Treporti followed the Republic's destiny and was territorially incorporated into the Duchy of Venice.

The way this land looked then was very different to its current landscape; it  was made up of the Treportine islands of Lio Piccolo, Mesole, Saccagnana and the current centre of Treporti, which at the time was called Isola della Chiesa (Church’s Island).
At the beginning of the 16th century, the Treporti island complex had already been outlined, even if the water around the emerged lands covered much more space as man had not yet intervened.
The 18th-century rural dwelling which are dotted all around the area attest to the fact that, in the 19th century, this land reached important social, financial and political stability.
Cavallino Treporti developed a strong rural vocation: agriculture and breeding were its two main sources of income at the time and the products were sold on the Venetian markets.

In the early years of the 20th century, a large-scale reclamation took place; this defined the current outline of the territory and was when the military strongholds were built; these were subsequently used during the two World Wars.
In the 1930s, Cavallino Treporti started to grow, affirming its agricultural vocation and its natural predisposition towards tourism. As a matter of fact, since the 1950s, Cavallino Treporti has now become the first European destination for outdoor tourism, mainly thanks to its highly-equipped campsites.
